Skin Cancer Awareness Month
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. As the weather warms and the days grow longer, it’s important to take proactive steps to safeguard your skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. For those working outdoors, daily exposure to the sun can increase your risk of skin cancer — especially without proper protection. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined.
Sun safety tips:
- Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply every two hours.
- Choose protective clothing such as long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
- Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) when possible.
- Perform regular skin checks and consult a healthcare provider about any new or changing spots.
Don’t let sun protection be an afterthought—make it part of your daily routine. Your long-term health depends on it.
