Briggs & Stratton Acquires Minority Stake in Accelerated Systems, Inc.

Briggs & Stratton has acquired a minority stake in Accelerated Systems, Inc. (ASI), which develops traction and control systems for outdoor power equipment and emobility applications and markets. The agreement includes the option for Briggs & Stratton to acquire additional equity in ASI over the next five years.

The advanced electric drive systems that ASI develops complement Briggs & Stratton’s strategic focus of being power-application experts for its customers, which includes internal combustion engines, electrified products and technologies and hybrid solutions, the company reports.

“This is an important technology investment for Briggs & Stratton as we continue to expand our capabilities as a power-application company,” says Steve Andrews, Briggs & Stratton’s president and CEO. “This acquisition provides meaningful capabilities that will significantly accelerate our electrification strategy.”

Based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, ASI has in-house design capabilities for electric motors, controllers and battery systems. On its website, the company states:

“Cordless and battery-powered tools are gaining popularity across the world. Electrification is the newest and most active area of product development in outdoor power equipment (OPE). The OPE market abounds with opportunities to replace the internal combustion engine (ICE) with environmentally less harmful, electric options. There are an immeasurable number of goods relying on an ICE, contributing tons of greenhouse gases, that ASI is solidly placed to ‘green-up’. The application for our world changing solutions only continues to expand as OEMs and their customers embrace, with their purchasing decisions, a green, electric option. As a one-stop Mechatronics Engineering Facility, we’re currently enabling several of North America’s largest OPE manufacturers realize their green, carbon neutral vision through electrification.”
