OPEAA announces 2011 Bill Nelson Scholarship Endowment recipients

Tyler MartinThe Outdoor Power Equipment Aftermarket Association (OPEAA) recently announced the recipients of the 2011 Bill Nelson Scholarship Endowment.


The endowment is an educational charity designed to advance the academic pursuits of employees and the children of employees working for member companies of OPEAA. This year, it awarded a total of four $2,500 scholarships to Jillian Andrews, Mesa, Ariz.; Elizabeth Childers, Plymouth, Ohio; Garett Hull, Springfield, Mo.; and Tyler Martin, Reidsville, Ga.


Jillian Andrews is currently pursuing her bachelor of arts degree in creative writing with minors in Spanish and political science at the University of Arizona. She is expected to graduate in May 2012.  After graduation, Jillian is planning on joining the Peace Corps in order to contribute to the education of children in a Third World country. She plans on pursuing a master’s of fine arts during and following her tour overseas. Andrews is a second-time recipient of the Bill Nelson Scholarship Endowment. Her father, Jeff, is employed by Desert Extrusion Corporation.


Elizabeth Childers is a first-year student at Ohio Wesleyan University, pursuing her degree in journalism and English with a concentration in creative writing and a minor in humanities and classics. She is expected to graduate in May 2013. After graduation, Childers intends to enter graduate school to work toward her master’s degree in English; she is also considering different legal programs. Her mother, Lillian, is employed by MTD Products Inc.


Garett Hull is graduating from Kickapoo High School this year and has received a scholarship to attend the University of Missouri Columbia, majoring in biological engineering with the option of later attending medical school. Hull participated on the varsity track and cross country teams, and he was a member of the National Honor Society. His father, Matt, is employed by Carlisle Power Transmissions.


Tyler Martin is graduating with honors from Tattnall County High School, where he ranked fourth in his class. He was a recipient of the Georgia Certificate of Merit. Martin was a member of the cross country team and received the team’s academic award. After graduation, Martin will be attending Georgia Southern University, where he will major in engineering. His father, Don, is employed by Rotary Corporation.


The Bill Nelson Scholarship Endowment is governed by five trustees who annually review applications and make awards. The current trustees are Chip Armstrong, American Lubricating Co.; David Errick, D.E. Errick; Bob Phillips, Desert Extrusion; Ed Nelson, Rotary Corporation; and Bob Wehmueller, Sierra International Inc.
