Same Store sales report for August 2025, plus inflation news
We publish these same-store sales reports monthly to show both a snapshot and a trendline of retail sales activity at OPE dealerships in North America. For August 2025, power-equipment dealerships in the U.S. showed modest retail gains, mostly, compared to the same month last year. Total dealership sales, combining the three categories of Wholegoods, Parts, and Service, grew 3% nationally.
Dealers in the Midwest fared best on strong wholegoods sales which were up 23% compared to August 2024. Wholegoods sales by dealers in the West and Northeast, however, were down 11%, comparing August 2025 to August 2024. Service activity was down nationwide, except for at dealers in the Northeast.
Core inflation update
The Commerce Department reported on Sept. 26 that its personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index was up 2.7% in August from a year earlier, just slightly higher than the 2.6% year-over-year increase in July.
When you remove the erratic factors of food and energy prices, so-called core PCE inflation showed a 2.9% increase in prices from August 2024, same as in July. Most economic forecasters expected these numbers.
This month’s reporting also showed that consumers continue to spend. It said that inflation-adjusted consumer spending climbed 0.4% from July. This increase is mostly on a 0.7% bump in spending for goods; spending on services such as travel and dining out rose just 0.2%. Some economists say that the increased spending outlays are a factor of higher-income earners buying activity.
Prices rose 0.3% from July, compared to a 0.2% increase the month before. Core prices rose 0.2%, same as in July.
