Vancouver, British Columbia Considering Ban on Gas-Powered OPE

In British Columbia, Canada, the city of Vancouver is considering a ban on gasoline-powered outdoor power equipment.

In late January, the Vancouver City Council passed a motion directing staff to report back with recommendations to phase out and transition personal and commercial use of gasoline-powered landscape-maintenance equipment in Vancouver by 2024, “giving consideration to a timeframe that is workable for residents and landscape maintenance service providers alike.”

The motion notes that:

  • The recommendations should be done in consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the BC Landscape and Nursery Association.
  • Phase-out recommendations should “be sensitive to any increased costs that transitioning would create for residents and the landscape maintenance industry, and that a reasonable transition timeframe be considered before any potential bylaw changes would be implemented.”
