Minnesota bill introduced to ban sale of new gas-powered yard equipment

In Minnesota, state representatives Heather Edelson and Jerry Newton have introduced a bill that would prohibit the sale of nonelectric powered lawn and garden equipment.

The ban would include “any of the following types of equipment powered by a spark ignition engine rated at or below 19 kilowatts or 25 gross horsepower,” according to the bill’s language:

  • Lawnmowers
  • Leaf blowers
  • Hedge clippers
  • Chainsaws
  • String trimmers
  • Edgers
  • Brush cutters

The bill was referred to the House Commerce Finance and Policy committee on February 13.

Edelson and Newton have also authored a bill that would prohibit the sale of ice-resurfacing machines not powered solely by electricity. That bill also has been referred to the House Commerce Finance and Policy committee.
